HOWL
Many consider August to be the height of summer: It’s a time when much of Europe goes on holiday, it’s generally one of the hottest months of the year, and it’s the last month before we start our descent into the shorter days of fall.
But I find July to be peak summer—sort of the beginning and end all at once. First comes July 4 here in the States, filled with its hot weather rituals of sunscreen-slathered gatherings, barbecue on the grill, water balloon fights, and fireworks. And then as July comes to a close, we almost unintentionally skip over August, at least if we don’t have a summer vacation planned. Many kids begin to head back to school or college, stores start touting Halloween decorations, and the fall fashions come out.
But regardless of which month you think deserves the more summery superlative, I think we can agree that it’s so easy to lose track of things during the slow (but also busy) days of summer. That’s a big reason why I started this Jewels From My Inbox series—so many good jewels go unanswered and uncovered, and that’s a darn shame. But no longer! These are some of my favorite jewels that made their way to my bustling inbox, from July’s rubies to summer’s most carefree beauties.
